5* REVIEW Annie The Musical UK TOUR 2019

5* REVIEW Annie The Musical UK TOUR 2019…

The 2019 cast and touring production of ANNIE does not disappoint.

This iconic musical may well be a scream (literally) throughout, but this show, direct from the West End, offers stunning lighting & choreography and a terrific cast.

There’s no doubt that visually this is the most impressive looking production in this shows touring history.

Currently starring Anita Dobson as Hannigan & Alex Bourne as Warbucks – this is a stellar cast celebrating a hugely impressive ensemble.

Later in the tour Lesley Joseph and Craig Revel Horwood will continue to terrorize the kids as Hannigan.

I caught the tour in Wolverhampton with Ava Smith as Annie – she was terrific. The confidence of these theatre children is astonishing. Her voice is gorgeous and she was utterly lovable throughout, owning this tricky part magnificently.

All of the children were perfect. Their precision is only to be admired. There are several complicated dance numbers in both acts which they performed brilliantly…

What I loved the most was the polish of the show. It has a very immersive shine akin to Mary Poppins and Matilda making it compelling for all age groups – crucial.

If you don’t know the story by now you should get out more, but, it’s a story of good over evil and love over money.

The orchestra in this production are quite remarkable. The horns do this book proud. A glorious sound celebrating this iconic and instantly recognisable score.

Alex Bourne is a perfect Warbucks owning the stage with his deliciously rich voice and powerful presence. Anita Dobson is a terrifically physical Hannigan throwing her drunken and despicable character around the stage with ease.

Nods to Carolyn Maitland as an adorable and beautiful sounding Grace & Richard Meek & Jenny Gayner as Rooster & Lily. Their ‘Easy Street’ with Dobson is joyous.

Touring theatre doesn’t get much better or more polished than this. Congratulations to the entire cast, team and Michael Harrison.
