Marcus was born on 11 March 1996 in Greenville, South Carolina, United States. Marcus’s father Marvin King was an established blues guitarist in his hometown.  While Marcus’ grandfather was also a well-known musician. Marcus started playing guitar at an early age and accompanied his father on his shows when he was 8 years old and began playing guitar along with him. During his teenage years, Marcus formed his own band and began playing music in schools and juggling clubs.

Marcus decided to drop out of his school when he was in junior year to pursue his music career and began studying guitar players, especially the Allman brothers band co-founder B.B. King, Waylon Jennings, Duane Allman, and more. By taking an academic approach to music Marcus King started learning about jazz theory and performances with Steve Watson. 

In 2014, Marcus King first gained some attention through YouTube when his video of playing Norman’s Guitar went viral with millions of views. 

King first started his YouTube channel in June 2012 and published his first video of his band called The Marcus King Band doing a live performance of “Shame Shame” at Chicora Alley. He uploaded a lyric video of the song “I Won’t Be Here” on 2nd November 2015 which has 1.3 million views.

As a kid, King had a hard life when he saw his mother walking out of his life. The challenges didn’t just stop there as his life kept on getting more difficult when he lost his childhood crush in an accident and later lost his brother-in-law, uncle, and grandfather. 

All this trauma left King being dragged into alcohol and substance abuse. Apparently, fans can hear the pain in King’s new album “Young Blood” which consists of various heart-touching songs including a few with a bit more haunting element like “Dark Cloud.” 

Talking about painful situations, Marcus King also recalled an incident that took place in 2020 when he was living with his ex-girlfriend in downtown Nashville. Marcus King stated he went on a walk when he came across a homeless person, but apparently, when he turned and looked at the singer, it appeared to be looking as if the person had a hood on with no face and features which made King extremely freak out of fear. 

Talking about his terrifying incident, King stated how he felt like he was in a Grim Reaper-type situation for a moment which eventually went on to inspire a song on his album which he wrote with Dan Auerbach. 

Young Blood is the second album released by Marcus King, he released his first album back in 2020 called “El Dorado” which landed King his nomination in Grammy Awards for Best Americana Album.
